Never sit on a safety helmet as a stool! This seemingly convenient action is actually a "chronic murder" of the protective ability of the safety helmet. There was originally a buffer space between the shell and the lining of the safety helmet, just like the gap between the eggshell and the egg white, to absorb the impact. When you sit on it, the weight of your whole body is pressed on the shell, and the plastic skeleton and buffer layer inside will be deformed, just like a flattened can. There is no problem on the surface, but the internal structure has been damaged. The next time you really encounter falling objects from high altitude, this "sitting" safety helmet may crack directly and lose its protective function.
What's more dangerous is that the brim and lock of the safety helmet are particularly fragile. When the body shakes while sitting, the brim is easily pressed out of cracks, and the plastic buckle of the lock may also break. These damages are usually not easy to find, but they may be "fatal loopholes" at critical moments. Just like someone did an experiment, the impact resistance of the safety helmet that has been sat on 50 times has decreased by more than 40%.
Some people think that "it's old and it's time to change it anyway, it doesn't matter if you sit on it", which is even more wrong. The life of a safety helmet is limited (about 2.5 years for plastic), and sitting and pressing will accelerate the aging of the material. Just like repeated bending of wire will make it brittle, even if the safety helmet has not reached the scrap deadline, its protective performance will be "retired" in advance. Old workers on the construction site often say: "It is better to hang the safety helmet on a tree as a bird's nest than to let it touch your butt" - this is a rough but true statement, the dignity and function of the safety helmet cannot withstand the test of the butt.
